Why People Prefer Digital Picture-Taking Over Film

By William Patel

After you enjoy a special event you want to recall it. And there's no better to do this than using photographs. This can be during graduation ceremonies birthdays or wedding occasions. One thing that has made photography so much easier is not having to deal with film. Film cameras have served people for over 100 years. But the last two decades have seen the rise of digital photography which rendered film photography obsolete.

There are several reasons why digital photography quickly became the dominant technology. The first reason is ease-of-use. Beginner photographers often use digital cameras to produce great images. Additionally, it isn't necessary to even own a particularly advanced camera to take great shots. On top of the huge variety of digital camera models available, people can also take quality snaps with their laptops, web cams or mobile phones.

What are the advantages of digital photography?

With digital cameras people don't have to wait to see if they have taken a good photo; they can instantly see the picture on the camera. This gives them the ability to remove poor photos and take better ones before changing location. They would be unable to do this with film cameras. It would have been very difficult for pro photographers. They must have often taken pictures only to find they were unsuitable. In addition, when doing digital photography, people can easily transfer photos to other media.

Digital photography is cheaper than film photography. Apart from buying digital cameras, people only have to charge their batteries to capture photos. Consequently, they avoid the costs associated with buying film. In addition, they do not have to visit photo development shops. All they need to do is connect the camera or phone to their computer, in order to view the pictures. They are free of having to deal with any of the toxic chemicals that are used in developing film photographs. Therefore, they will reduce costs and maintain good personal and environmental health in the process.

Another benefit is that digital photographs are so easy to manipulate. Even novices can make alterations to pictures using freely available software. They can enhance colors, crop unwanted parts, or apply artistic effects such as sepia and other themes. It's even possible to change a colour photo to black and white and vice versa. These alterations can be carried out with the use of a mouse, keyboard and a little know-how.

Pictures stored on film or paper will decrease in quality within decades. This can be a major hindrance, especially if individuals would like to use them in the future. Digital photography does not suffer from this problem. There is a vast array of digital devices that people can choose from to store images. The quality of the photos should remain almost as high as the first day they were placed on the device.

Of course digital cameras make the sharing of photographs with family much simpler. The current trend is for people to spend time on social networking sites sharing their life experiences. Digital photos hugely aid this. People can easily move digital images from their phone to their Facebook profile sometimes even while on the go. Their friends can then enjoy their collection.
