Often seen as objects of art, the African tribal masks play an important role in even modern day tribal culture. For many tribes it is still seen as a magical part of each and every ceremony. The people of the tribe take part in these ceremonies at a feverish pace.

Those who study tribal ways not only see these items as art but learn the meaning behind the mask and what it stands for. Being part of an entire costume, it rarely survives the test of time, so what others see is merely a replica of the once real thing. Yet others are destroyed when the ritual has been played out and the need for the mask has been met.

It is astounding the number of similarities that can be found among the different tribes. This goes to show the integral part that was played by these face coverings in every culture there is. The shaman, who is the medium between the natural and supernatural worlds, often appears in full regalia representing himself as some sort of animal that the tribe has depended on for survival. The shaman creates magic, cures illness, and foretells the future during these tribal ceremonies.

What is seen on the market today is typically replications of the kind of face coverings used centuries ago. Even for the nonbeliever there is something magical about them. Modern day tribal rituals are played out despite their pagan backgrounds. It was a means for these people to make contact with the many gods they continue to believe in.

You will never find a tribal face covering that is an exact replica of another. They were used for numerous purposes and each purpose required a specific mask. They could be seeking spiritual guidance, or release from an illness. Whatever the reason, a new face covering was sculpted to fit the reason it was being used for. They often would often beseech prosperity for the tribe.

If you were the chosen one to make the facial coverings you were held in high esteem by your fellow men. This talent was taught to an individual by those that did the work before them. Every color and marking had a purpose, and the master carver knew them all.

The mask itself can be created from stone, wood, ivory, and metal. Occasionally even animal bones are carved and filed and then added as adornment. The shape of the eyes and the mouth and chin all play a part in the ritual. Many are topped with hair or some other material that represents hair.

No one can truly appreciate the African tribal masks unless they delve into the culture of the tribe. Knowing what a certain mask was used for only adds to the allure and magic they emit. Each existed for a specific reason and knowing that reason makes your art object that much more special.
