What to look For Before Purchasing a Mid-Level Expensive Watches

By Kevin Bacon

When you are purchasing a mid-level expensive watch, priced over $1,000, there are many things you want to look out for. You're probably looking for a mechanical movement rather than quartz, as well as a brand watch like Breguet. Here are a couple of the most important factors for you to consider as you're shopping for a medium range watch.

Most mens luxury watches over $1,000 will include mechanical movement. You must , however , look for a watch with anti-reflective coating that decreases glare on the face of the watch. You can simply see the difference by comparing a dial of a top-end watch vs a cheaper watch in the light. This coating improves legibility and is applied to the front and rear of the watch's crystal. Look for a watch which has the coating on either side, even though it should be on the bottom at least. As the coating can scratch off, you may need to have it reapplied or replace the crystal at some point.

You may also need to check for screwed links in the bangle of the watch. Screw bars are much better than screw pins, as they last for longer and look better. Both can be changed with the correct tools. Next, look for a chronometer certification that may not be included with the watch you're considering, even though it definitely adds real value. A small number of Swiss-made watches come COSC Chronometer certified, which implies they are sent to COSC and tested over days in many positions.

Your watch should also have a really prime quality finish and polish, as some watches are basically like fake chromed metal and don't last long. Check the edges of the watch and ensure the finish is applied uniformly directly to the metal. The finish shouldn't simply be a coating that will wear off over a period of time.

Other considerations that make a great mid-range timepiece include a novel design, like the Rolex Submariner, as well as some decoration on the dial or the movement. You'll also want to consider worth retention if you ever wish to sell the watch at some specific point.
