Things To Look Out For While Buying A Jeep Cherokee

By Tom Lutak

The Jeep Cherokee is a product of the Chrysler Group. It is the oldest sports utility vehicle. Jeeps were used in the Second World War by Americans and their allies. The off road abilities of the vehicle were its biggest marketing point.

Towards the mid 1980's, the cars assumed individual identities. The Cherokee was lighter and could now be obtained in two or four-door version. It also had better fuel economy. The vehicle could sit five although the backseat was not as spacious. The car afforded good view for both the passengers and the driver as it was set tall.

Many people who own a Cherokee will confirm that the vehicle is easy to maintain. Internet forums will reveal proud owners who vouch for this ease in maintenance. With a little know-how and using hand held tools most repairs can be easily done. The costs of having common repairs done at your local garage are not high as with other models in its class. The main competitive advantage of this car is without doubt it's off road capabilities. With a stellar reputation for tackling the outdoors, the car remains one of the most versatile models. The relatively comfortable interiors and absence of many gadgets helps too.

1985 saw the introduction of upgrades in the car. The interiors were also made better, alloy wheels were used and chrome was used to construct the grill. Special passenger handles and headrests for all front seats were added as well. Buyers had a choice between the 4-wheel drive and the new 2-wheel drive version. Also, a new turbocharged diesel engine was added.

In the next year, the engine power was boosted. This is because the carburetor system was replaced with a fuel injection system. The improved engine output more horsepower. In an effort to enhance the off-road credentials of the brand, the manufacturers added heavy-duty suspension parts as well. They introduced bigger tires in addition.

The following years saw changes such as the introduction of a sporty two-door version in 1989. Anti-lock braking system was put in place whether the vehicle was in 2WD or 4WD mode making it stand out from competition. By 1992 the floors was carpeted. There was optional leather seating. Engine capacity was bigger and now the car could move from 0 to 60mph in under 9 seconds.

The car is best bought from a single owner. This again is not set in stone. It only allows you a degree of certainty in the vehicle's condition. A single owner is likely to give you the best background of the one you are buying.

The Jeep Cherokee was produced until the year 2001. Despite this fact, the cars can be seen on the road today. This is due to their longevity.
