How To Buy The Most Awesome 5 Carat Diamond Ring

By Stan Miyaki

What girl could possibly resist a 5 carat diamond ring. For over five hundred years, diamond rings have been offered as inducements to marry. Probably the most famous one of all was given by Sir Richard Burton to his bride-to-be, Elizabeth Taylor, British actress. He was her fifth husband. The 33.19 carat cut-cornered, rectangular cut gemstone was flanked on each side by two baguettes. The stones were mounted in a platinum setting.

The most duplicated engagement trinket in history was the blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds given by Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Another famous royal engagement was sealed by an eternity band containing diamonds and rubies. It was given to American actress, Grace Kelly, by Prince Ranier of Monaco. He subsequently decided to replace it with a 12 carat stone cut in the emerald shape.

When shopping for a 5 carat diamond ring, every retail jewelry store or online gemstone emporium will have a selection of predesigned, ready to wear rings. Alternatively, why not consider commissioning one of your own design. In a recent new case study, a potential customer sent some simple instructions along with a couple of photographs illustrating the design he required. The result exceeded the customer's expectations and provided his fiance with a beautiful ring to show her friends.

Carat weight is just one of four characteristics that are used to fully describe a gemstone. These are known collectively as the '4Cs'. The other three are clarity, color and cut. In terms of color, the most highly prized stones are completely free from color. These are called "D" grade gemstones. The next highest grades, "E" and "F, " have a slight color that can be detected by using specialist techniques and equipment but is not readily discernible by the human eye.

Gemstones graded "H" or "G" may have a slight tinge of color and "K" and "J" grade gems are visibly colored. Pink-colored stones like the one worn by Jennifer Lopez while she was briefly engaged to Ben Affleck, are highly prized and very rare. The most popular cut of gem is the round cut. The kind of stone that Katie Holmes wore when Tom Cruise gave her a 5 carat diamond ring was in the oval cut, in a setting of rose gold and platinum. The stone in J-Lo's ring was a heart cut. Other types of gemstone cut include Princess, Pear, Asscher, Emerald, Radiant, Cushion and Marquise.

There are only a few active commercial mines where diamonds may be found. Many of these are located in Africa in Angola, South Africa and Botswana. There are also some active mines in Lesotho, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. Other countries harboring commercial diamond mines include India, Canada, Russia, the United States and Australia. One non-commercial mine, the Crater of Diamonds State Park, is located in the State of Arkansas in the U. S.
